Strategies for Incident Preparedness (SIP)
Facilitating integrated disaster planning for health care professionals.
CHALLENGE:
To create and practice coordinated, multi-level disaster response plans for complex medical emergencies.
SOLUTION:
Strategies for Incident Preparedness (SIP) is a collection of disaster scenarios designed as a training workbook for use by hospitals and health care professionals to bolster preparedness. The workbook includes thought provoking questions, as well as reference documents for users.
Goals of the SIP include:
- Assist in planning for a response to different types of complex medical emergencies (natural or man-made).
- Promote awareness and cooperation between health care organizations and emergency managers, disaster responders, local officials and public safety and law enforcement officers.
- Initiate conversations surrounding all aspects of response to complex medical emergencies, including considerations for people with disabilities and the need to train to operate at the fringe of available resources.
Recognizing that a complex medical emergency is not limited by geo-political boundaries, the workbook has been translated into Spanish and presented internationally in Latin and South America.
POTENTIAL APPLICATION:
SIP can be used to generate awareness and to conduct drills internally within hospitals and across health systems, and externally with multiple agencies and partners involved in disaster response.
